Best Practice
Broadway Junior School in Sunderland has a reputation for having a fantastic breakfast club which is attended by up to 70 pupils per day.
Two years ago Broadway Junior School won a prize from the Home Grown Cereals Association through a competition they were running to help fund their healthy breakfast club and as a result of this DairyCo's School Milk Project became involved in helping them with their yearly Farmhouse Breakfast Week events.
Last year, mascot Charlotte the Cow joined the children for breakfast and this year the children enjoyed watching and tasting a smoothie demonstration with healthy breakfast recipe booklets to take home and try with their families.
Broadway Junior school is very proactive when it comes to healthy eating and won top prize in a national competition to promote fitness and healthy eating - and it plans to share part of the £3000 prize money with a school in Ghana. Sponsors Le Crunch invited schools to stage an apple day, and for their "Apple Day" Broadway Juniors enjoyed cooking with apples, a fresh apple tasting session and an apple bobbing competition together with apple-themed classroom activities.
