Providing School Milk

Published 23 November 11

The only drinks that should be available for school pupils are milk, water and fruit juices and by introducing milk into your school you can help your school work towards a Healthier Schools status

Providing School Milk 1

Why provide milk in school?

Healthy Eating is one of the four key areas in the NHSS and schools participating in the scheme will be working towards the following minimum standards:

  • Include education on healthier eating and basic food safety practices taught in the curriculum
  • Present consistent, informed messages about healthy eating - for example, food on offer in vending machines, tuck shops and school   meals should complement the taught curriculum
  • Provide, promote and monitor healthier food at lunch and break times and in any breakfast clubs where they are provided

In a nutshell, providing milk to children ticks a box on the healthy schools standard and can fit in with the 'whole school approach' to healthy eating and drinking in a very simple way, as well as fitting in with the nutritional standards for schools. In this section you will find information on the types of school milk provision, case studies and useful links to help you get started.
