Dairy industry latest statistics – new pocketbook for 2010

Published 14 September 10

The latest dairy statistics pocketbook issued by DairyCo, provides the industry with a raft of independent facts and figures.  Dairy statistics: an insider's guide 2010 offers revised information for the UK, and highlights quantitative data for the EU and the world.

DairyCo senior analyst Arnaud Haye says: "The pocketbook provides information stretching from the farmgate to consumers - it's become an essential tool for the industry and is used by the media and farmer groups as a basis for informed debate."

As for last year, some detailed information on how UK farmers' input costs have varied during 2009 is provided; details of how commodity markets in the UK, EU and across the world changed during the past year; and figures showing where UK advertising expenditure on dairy products stood during 2009/10.

Production statistics show a continued decline in the number of litres of milk delivered to dairies which fell to 12.8 billion litres during 2009/10 - the lowest volume produced in the UK in almost 40 years.

Prices also feature with the average annual farmgate price falling to 23.71ppl in 2009. Figures also show the number of UK dairy farmers continued to fall - from 17,060 in 2008 to 16,404 in 2009.  On the other hand average yields rose from 6943 litres in 2008 to 7084 litres in 2009 and average herd size increased slightly to 113.

Mr Haye says: "The pocketbook has been extremely well received in previous years and again this year we've sent a copy to every British dairy farmer.  It means they will have the answers at their fingertips to the most frequently asked questions about the dairy industry in the UK and the rest of the world."
