Minister launches £3.3m dairy supply chain efficiencies project

Published 1 July 10

Wales' Rural Affairs Minister, Elin Jones has today [Thursday 1 July] launched a new project designed to support the dairy industry in Wales to improve the efficiency, sustainability and added value of the dairy supply chain.

The comprehensive three-year project has been made possible by DairyCo and Coleg Sir Gar which have jointly secured £3.3 million in funding from the Supply Chain Efficiencies scheme through the Welsh Assembly Government's Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013.

It is an initiative which has the potential to bring benefits to every dairy farmer in Wales by focusing on farm business efficiency.

Everything from energy use on-farm and opportunities for farmer collaboration, to herd health and farmland productivity will be put under the spotlight to find the most efficient methods of working.

One of the initiatives is an energy efficiency analysis involving 250 dairy farms.  Working with experts it will examine diesel, electricity and water usage on farms, with the aim of identifying areas where savings could be made.

Another important part of the programme will be a series of events that will put livestock health issues such as lameness, mastitis and fertility in the spotlight, with advice from some of the top professionals in their field.

The format of these events will go a step further than current on-farm events by drawing in professionals such as vets and industry related businesses as well as dairy farmers.

Other elements of the initiative include use of DairyCo's benchmarking system, Milkbench+, information on collaborative ventures and supply chain impact groups.

Together, these will help to raise awareness of opportunities for improvements in productivity and business efficiency and the potential benefits of businesses working together.

Every dairy farmer can gain from the project and I'd encourage them to get involved and work with the Dairy Development Centre and DairyCo to really make the most of these opportunities.
