Make sure all staff can spot the bulling cow

Published 22 April 09

Spotting when cows are bulling needs to be an essential part of the daily farming routine if farmers are to maximise yield and minimise culling. But knowing what to look for and catching the signs out in the field are two different things particularly at this time of the year when cows are out at grass.

According to DairyCo extension officer Chris Coxon one of the most important things you can do to ensure you don't miss signs of bulling is make sure that all staff working on the farm know what to look for. "Taking the time to spot bulling cows is important, but if all staff are aware of the signs then it makes it much easier to identify them."

To help farmers and staff identify bulling cows more easily, DairyCo's multi-language DVD explains the signs of bulling and how and when they can be detected

Small changes in cow behaviour are shown in the film, alongside more significant changes that are easier to identify such as head mounting, and standing to be mounted. The DVD also explains why some cows will be less inclined to show signs of bulling, such as poor health or weight loss. Dairy farmers can order a free copy of the DVD from DairyCo by calling 01285 646510 or emailing publications@dairyco.org.uk.
