Five EU states to pay superlevies for exceeding 2010-11 milk quota

Published 20 October 11

In the 2010/11 quota year, five EU member states, Denmark, the Netherlands, Austria, Cyprus and Luxembourg, exceeded their national milk quotas by a total of almost 200,000 tonnes. As a result these countries will have to pay fines, known as 'superlevy' totalling €55.57 million.

Denmark and the Netherlands exceeded both their quota for deliveries to dairies and their direct sales quota, while the other Member States exceeded only their quota for deliveries.

Following the decisions taken in the framework of the 2008 CAP Health Check, quotas were increased by 1% in the year 2010/2011.

Despite the fact that five Member States exceeded their quotas, total EU production remained 6% below the total quota volume and 14 Member States recorded deliveries at least 10% below their quota.

After adjustment for fat content, UK dairy deliveries totalled 13.77 million tonnes, 9.7% under quota while direct sales totalled 141,284 tonnes, 46,461 tonnes under quota.

More information on 2010/11 milk quotas is available from the EU commission.
