Farmers Weekly Dairy Farmer of the Year

Published 7 October 11

Congratulations to Gavin Fowler, the 2011 Farmers Weekly Dairy Farmer of the Year, sponsored by DairyCo.FW Award Winner 2011

DairyCo extension officer Sophie Kinnear accompanied the judges as they visited the three finalists of this year's award. Here are some of the themes she saw running across the finalists, Gavin Fowler, Peter Willes and Fergus Mc Dowall.

Attention to detail

All three finalists showed impressive attention to detail. Whether it was cow health, cost control or milk quality no detail escaped the scrutiny of the farmers. They had a great grip on all aspect of their business, an awareness of the needs of their workforces, the local community and most importantly their cows.

Reviewing the business

I noticed that all three farmers were constantly questioning and reviewing each aspect of their business, from everyday tasks to future business strategy.  They were open to new technology and ideas and were willing to adapt and change if they needed to.

Focus on dairy

Three very different farms with equally different visions; however they are all committed to the core dairy business.  They each showed a clear passion with strong goals keeping them focused at the heart of their business decisions.  Each has shown their commitment to the industry through varying types of investment to their enterprises.

Whilst keeping a clear eye on the day to day running of the business each of the finalists have clearly planned for business succession with confidence in the family vision of the future.
