Marks and Spencer has announced a new pricing model for its 44 dedicated producers. The Milk Pledge Plus model will take into account changes in production cost, specifically fuel, fertiliser and animal feed costs. It will also look at the retail price of milk with the formula being reviewed on a six-monthly basis.
In addition to the pricing formula, the contract will also offer bonuses to farmers who meet the highest levels of animal welfare. Indicators for welfare will include instances of mastitis and lameness in additon to longevity. There will also be measures looking at quality of buildings.
