Medina Foods has announced that its Blaydon Dairy is to close, with the loss of around 100 jobs.
Medina Foods purchased the Blaydon site from the DFB receivers in January 2010 but have been unable to secure enough business in the North East to keep the dairy operating. The loss of Hanover Dairies sales volumes to Dairy Crest, along with the costs associated with transporting milk processed at Blaydon to customers in Yorkshire and Lancashire have meant that the site is no longer financially viable.
According to the company, milk producers supplying Blaydon will not be affected as their milk will be diverted to the Huddersfield site.
