Are you missing out on grant aid?

Nearly 100 dairy farmers from across the region attended a meeting in Tissington, in Derbyshire, on 11 February, about the grant opportunities available to them. The meeting, organised by DairyCo, brought together representatives from those government organisations involved in awarding grants to dairy farmers in the Midlands.

At the meeting the speakers clearly laid out the different sources and options available, the criteria for grants and they demonstrated examples of what can be funded. There was a lively question and answer session as local farmers used the opportunity to pick the brains of the experts.

"There are some real opportunities for dairy farmers across the Midlands to access valuable grants and they need to make sure they are not missing out!" says local DairyCo Extension Officer Judith Stafford. "There is money available for investment in a range of activities such as equipment or building improvements that go beyond the basic industry legislative minimum, and that can be used to improve the economic viability of a business, the health and welfare status of the herd or its environmental impact.

"There are slightly different criteria and application processes depending on where you farm, but by bringing representatives from both the East and West Midlands together at this meeting we managed to cover the whole area," Judith explained.

At the end of February DairyCo is holding a meeting locally for dairy farmers interested in crossbreeding. The event, entitled "An introduction to crossbreeding", is being held at the Bluebell Inn, Tissington on Thursday 25 February at 11am. For more information contact Judith Stafford on 07891 556623.
