Monthly EU Milk Deliveries

Please note, these figures are now reported in million litres (not thousand tonnes).

  • In August 2014, 12,028 million litres of milk were delivered to dairies in the EU-28, 497 million litres (4.3%) more than in August 2013. This is a cumulative year on year increase of 5%. However this is a decrease of 362 million litres (2.9%) on the month.

Please note Spain data provisional from January 2010, France data provisional from January 2010, Italian data is provisional from July 2014, Slovenia data provisional from August 2013 and UK data provisional from January 2007. Data from Belgium since June 2014 are Eurostat estimates.

Figures from January 2007 to March 2014 do not include Malta's milk delivery data due to confidentiality. It was estimated they only produced around 3-6 million litres per month which would not substantially affect the percentage increase/decrease shown.

EU Milk Deliveries

Comparisons between years showed that of the EU-28 member states, 24 showed an increase in deliveries (in million litres) between August 2013 and August 2014, while 3 member states (Greece, Netherlands and Spain) showed a decrease.

The five largest milk producing members in August 2014 remained the same as the previous month (Germany, France, UK, Netherlands and Poland) and produced a combined figure of 7,610m litres, which was 332m litres (4.6%) more than the previous year. These five countries contribute over half of the milk delivered in EU-28 countries.

Romania showed the largest year on year increase in percentage terms, as it did in June and July, with August 2014 deliveries at 86.4m litres - an increase of 12.8m litres (17.4%).

 The August EU weighted average milk price stood at €37.16/100kg (30.51ppl), up €0.01/100kg on the previous month. Compared with the previous year, the weighted average EU price for August was up €0.31/100kg (0.8%), however, this was a decrease on the year of 2.12ppl.
