UK Dairy Product Production

  • Provisional production data from Defra showed that 588 thousand tonnes of liquid milk were produced in November 2014, approximately 13 thousand tonnes (2.2%) less than November 2013.
  • Cumulatively, liquid milk production for the 12 months ending November 2014 was 214 thousand tonnes higher compared with the same period ending November 2013, at 7,166 thousand tonnes.
  • Butter production was down by 1 thousand tonnes (9.9%) in November 2014 compared with the previous year at 11 thousand tonnes. The cumulative production for the 12 months ending November 2014 was down by 2.8% compared with the same period the previous year.
  • Cheese production in November 2014 stood at 30 thousand tonnes, 1 thousand tonnes more on the year. On a cumulative basis, cheese production for the 12 months ending November 2014 reached 406 thousand tonnes, up 5.8% on the previous 12 month period.

Provisional cheese production figures for 2013 show that Cheddar production was down by 8.1% compared to the previous year at 241,490 tonnes.

Production of 'other cheeses' has risen by 11 thousand tonnes (12.4%) on the year.

Total cheese production stood at 388,238 tonnes which was a 2.2% decrease compared to the previous year. It must be stressed however that these figures are provisional and are likely to be retrospectively changed.
