UK Dairy Product Production

  • Provisional production data from Defra showed that 566.13 thousand tonnes of liquid milk were produced in February 2014, approximately 32.10 thousand tonnes more than February 2013.
  • Cumulatively, liquid milk production for the 12 months ending February 2014 was 155.17 thousand tonnes higher compared with the same period ending February 2013, at 6,891.61 thousand tonnes.
  • Butter production was up by 2.14 thousand tonnes (23.4%) in February compared with the previous year at 11.29 thousand tonnes. Production for the 12 months ending February 2014 was up by 4.63 thousand tonnes (3.3%) compared with the same period in 2013.
  • Cheese production in February 2014 stood at 31.17 thousand tonnes, 2.28 thousand tonnes (7.9%) higher than the previous year. On a cumulative basis, cheese production for the 12 months ending February 2014 reached 391.37 thousand tonnes, up 1.0% (3.83 thousand tonnes) on the previous 12 month period.

UK Manufacture of Cheese

Provisional cheese production figures for 2013 show that Cheddar production was down by 2.3% compared to the previous year at 256,795 tonnes.

Mozzarella production figures have been confidential since 2010 and are included within the 'other cheeses' category. Production of 'other cheeses' has risen by 108 tonnes (0.1%) on the year.

Total cheese production stood at 392,185 tonnes which was a 1.2% decrease compared to the previous year. It must be stressed however that these figures are provisional and are likely to be retrospectively changed.
