UK Dairy Product Production

  • Provisional production data from Defra showed that 585.23 thousand tonnes of liquid milk were produced in June 2014, approximately 25.19 thousand tonnes more than June 2013.
  • Cumulatively, liquid milk production for the 12 months ending June 2014 was 251.94 thousand tonnes higher compared with the same period ending June 2013, at 7,109.85 thousand tonnes.
  • Butter production was down by 1.79 thousand tonnes (12.5%) in June compared with the previous year at 12.59 thousand tonnes. Production for the 12 months ending June 2014 was up by 3.17 thousand tonnes (2.2%) compared with the same period in 2013.
  • Cheese production in June 2014 stood at 34.75 thousand tonnes, 1.28 thousand tonnes (3.8%) higher than the previous year. On a cumulative basis, cheese production for the 12 months ending June 2014 reached 397.31 thousand tonnes, up 5.1% (19.17 thousand tonnes) on the previous 12 month period.

UK Manufacture of Cheese

Provisional cheese production figures for 2013 show that Cheddar production was down by 8.1% compared to the previous year at 241,490 tonnes.

Production of 'other cheeses' has risen by 11 thousand tonnes (12.4%) on the year.

Total cheese production stood at 388,238 tonnes which was a 8.1% decrease compared to the previous year. It must be stressed however that these figures are provisional and are likely to be retrospectively changed.
