UK Dairy Product Production

  • Provisional production data from Defra showed that 625.8 thousand tonnes of liquid milk were produced in May 2014, approximately 20.42 thousand tonnes more than May 2013.
  • Cumulatively, liquid milk production for the 12 months ending May 2014 was 229.88 thousand tonnes higher compared with the same period ending May 2013, at 7,087.89 thousand tonnes.
  • Butter production was down by 0.34 thousand tonnes (2.5%) in May compared with the previous year at 13.48 thousand tonnes. Production for the 12 months ending May 2014 was up by 7.03 thousand tonnes (5.0%) compared with the same period in 2013.
  • Cheese production in May 2014 stood at 38.59 thousand tonnes, 0.53 thousand tonnes (1.4%) higher than the previous year. On a cumulative basis, cheese production for the 12 months ending May 2014 reached 395.58 thousand tonnes, up 3.7% (13.97 thousand tonnes) on the previous 12 month period.

UK Manufacture of Cheese

Provisional cheese production figures for 2013 show that Cheddar production was down by 8.1% compared to the previous year at 241,490 tonnes.

Production of 'other cheeses' has risen by 11 thousand tonnes (12.4%) on the year.

Total cheese production stood at 388,238 tonnes which was a 8.1% decrease compared to the previous year. It must be stressed however that these figures are provisional and are likely to be retrospectively changed.
