UK Dairy Product Production

  • Provisional production data from Defra showed that 601.51 thousand tonnes of liquid milk were produced in August 2014, approximately 24.35 thousand tonnes (4.2%) more than August 2013.
  • Cumulatively, liquid milk production for the 12 months ending August 2014 was 305.38 thousand tonnes higher compared with the same period ending August 2013, at 7,165.66 thousand tonnes.
  • Butter production was down by 1.68 thousand tonnes (14.3%) in August 2014 compared with the previous year at 9.91 thousand tonnes. However, production for the 12 months ending August 2014 was down by only 1.4% compared with the same period in 2012/13.
  • Cheese production in August 2014 stood at 33.74 thousand tonnes, static on the year. On a cumulative basis, cheese production for the 12 months ending August 2014 reached 398.42 thousand tonnes, up 5.6% on the previous 12 month period.

UK Manufacture of Cheese

Provisional cheese production figures for 2013 show that Cheddar production was down by 8.1% compared to the previous year at 241,490 tonnes.

Production of 'other cheeses' has risen by 11 thousand tonnes (12.4%) on the year.

Total cheese production stood at 388,238 tonnes which was a 8.1% decrease compared to the previous year. It must be stressed however that these figures are provisional and are likely to be retrospectively changed.
