UK Dairy Product Production

  • Provisional production data from Defra showed that 597 thousand tonnes of liquid milk were produced in December 2014, approximately 6 thousand tonnes (0.9%) less than December 2013.
  • Cumulatively, liquid milk production for the 12 months ending December 2014 was 172 thousand tonnes higher compared with the same period ending December 2013, at 7,164 thousand tonnes.
  • Butter production was down by 1 thousand tonnes (11.8%) in December 2014 compared with the previous year at 10 thousand tonnes. The cumulative production for the 12 months ending December 2014 was down by 3.5% compared with the same period the previous year.
  • Cheese production in December 2014 stood at 33 thousand tonnes, 2 thousand tonnes more on the year. On a cumulative basis, cheese production for the 12 months ending December 2014 reached 408 thousand tonnes, up 6.3% on the previous 12 month period.

Provisional cheese production figures for 2013 show that Cheddar production was down by 8.1% compared to the previous year at 241,490 tonnes.

Production of 'other cheeses' has risen by 11 thousand tonnes (12.4%) on the year.

Total cheese production stood at 388,238 tonnes which was a 2.2% decrease compared to the previous year. It must be stressed however that these figures are provisional and are likely to be retrospectively changed.
