UK Dairy Product Production

  • Provisional production data from Defra showed that 610 thousand tonnes of liquid milk were produced in October 2014, approximately 12,589 tonnes (2.1%) more October 2013.
  • Cumulatively, liquid milk production for the 12 months ending October 2014 was 265 thousand tonnes higher compared with the same period ending October 2013, at 7,180 thousand tonnes.
  • Butter production was up by 242 tonnes (2.1%) in October 2014 compared with the previous year at 12 thousand tonnes. However, production for the 12 months ending October 2014 was down by 1.9% compared with the same period in 2012/13.
  • Cheese production in October 2014 stood at 32 thousand tonnes, 1,927 tonnes more on the year. On a cumulative basis, cheese production for the 12 months ending October 2014 reached 405 thousand tonnes, up 6.2% on the previous 12 month period.

Provisional cheese production figures for 2013 show that Cheddar production was down by 8.1% compared to the previous year at 241,490 tonnes.

Production of 'other cheeses' has risen by 11 thousand tonnes (12.4%) on the year.

Total cheese production stood at 388,238 tonnes which was a 8.1% decrease compared to the previous year. It must be stressed however that these figures are provisional and are likely to be retrospectively changed.
