The increase in agricultural intensification over the last five decades has resulted in nutrient surpluses in some areas. Although the number of dairy cows has been reduced by c. 35% since 1975, there has been an increase in the number of larger herds, which has invariably taken place without consideration for increased requirements for manure management resources (storage capacity, land area etc.).
