Commentary on Milk Price Changes

No price adjustments were announced for March 2012.  The only price change announced so far for April is the Tesco Sustainable Dairy Group (TSDG) six month review based on the Promar Cost Tracker. From 1st April the 700 TSDG suppliers will receive 0.65p less largely as a result of lower feed prices between February 2011 and February 2012 which has been partially offset by other production cost increases.

One milk price change has been announced for May.  Dairy Crest has announced that it will reduce the milk price it pays to around 575 of its farmers who don't supply either its retailer milk pools or its Davidstow contract, by 2ppl from 1 May 2012.  A number of other processors have confirmed that they will hold prices for April, although several have indicated that they are considering price adjustments for May.     Meanwhile, although Arla has not announced any price changes, the published early estimate for the AFMP April 2012 balancing charge is a brutal 6.5p per litre (compared to 2p in April 2011) followed by an early estimate of 6.5p per litre in May.

The Dairy Crest 'milk&more' contract ceased at the end of February so is no longer included in the league table.

The news for this month is that Dairy Crest's contract to supply liquid milk to Tesco will not be renewed when it comes to an end in July 2012, leaving Arla and Robert Wiseman Dairies as the main suppliers of fresh milk to Tesco.  Also Sainsbury's has announced that the Sainsbury's Dairy Development Group (SDDG) will be launching a new milk supply contract from 1 May for its farmers through Arla, Dairy Crest and Robert Wiseman Dairies.  The new contract will be based on a cost of production model using figures supplied by the group of 324 farms through Kite Consulting.

In summary, price movements for the three months February 2012 to April 2012 are:

March

No price increases announced for March 2012.

April

Contracts based on Tesco Promar Cost Tracker to reduce by -0.65p from April 1.

May

Sainsbury's contracts (SDDG) moving to new cost of production based pricing model from May 1.  Dairy Crest Sainsbury's to be based on standard litre price of 30.30p per litre.  See Dairy Market Update 26 April for more details.

Dairy Crest: -2.00p per litre for non-aligned liquid from May 1.
