UK Dairy Product Production

  • Provisional production data from Defra showed that 571,680 tonnes of liquid milk were produced in February, approximately 27,300 tonnes (5.0%) more than February last year.
  • Cumulatively, liquid milk production for the 12 months ending February 2012 was 2.5% (174,900 tonnes) higher compared with the same period ending February 2011 at 7,116 thousand tonnes.
  • Butter production was up by 3,000 tonnes (34.6%) in February compared with the previous year at 11,830 tonnes whilst production for the 12 months ending February 2012 was up by just under 11,100 tonnes (9.3%) compared with the same period last year.
  • Cheese production in February 2012 stood at 30,000 tonnes, 650 tonnes (2.2%) higher than the previous year. On a cumulative basis, Cheese production for the 12 months ending February 2012 reached 387,560 tonnes, up 2.5% (9,400 tonnes) on the previous 12 month period.

UK Manufacture of Cheese

Provisional cheese production figures for 2010 show that cheddar production was up by 8.9% compared to the previous year at 257,000 tonnes. Mozzarella production figures are now confidential and are classed within the 'other cheeses' category. This category then is compared with the other cheeses and Mozarella categories from last year combined to show that production of other cheeses were up in 2010 compared to 2009 by 1,000 tonnes (1.3%) to 79,000 tonnes. Total cheese production stood at 382,000 tonnes which was a 6.4% increase compared to the previous year. It must be stressed however that these figures are provisional and are likely to be retrospectively changed.
