UK Dairy Product Production

  • Provisional product production figures for liquid milk, butter and cheese have all shown increases in June compared to the previous year.
  • Rolling annual results show that raw milk processed into liquid was marginally up compared with the previous year, and cheese and butter production were both lower.

The latest provisional data for June shows that raw milk processed into liquid was 3.5% higher compared with last year, at 565,101 tonnes.  Production for the year ending June shows a 1.0% (64.4 thousand tonnes) increase in liquid milk produced compared to the previous year, to 6,826 thousand tonnes.

Milk processed into butter totalled 11,600 tonnes in June, an increase of 12.7% (1,310 tonnes) compared with the level in June 2009.  Data for the 12 months ending June 2010 stood at 115,780 tonnes, a fall of 3.7% (4,470 tonnes) compared to the same period last year.

Cheese production was 2,280 tonnes (6.6%) higher in June compared to last year at 37,100 tonnes.  Milk used for cheese production for the year ending June 2010 stood at 362,280 tonnes, 1.4% (5,260 tonnes) down on the previous year's level.

UK Manufacture of Cheese

Provisional cheese production figures for 2009 show that cheddar production was down by 8.5% compared to the previous year at 238,000 tonnes. Mozzarella production was down in 2009 compared to 2008, 44,000 tonnes were produced which was a 6.4% decrease compared to the previous year. Total cheese production stood at 354,000 tonnes which was a 7.3% decrease compared to the previous year. It must be stressed however that these figures are provisional and are likely to be retrospectively changed.
