Liquid Milk Expenditure and Volume Sales

Overview of consumer liquid milk market

Comparing the 52 weeks ending 14 June 2009 and the 52 weeks ending 13 June 2010:

  • Total milk sales by volume stood at 5.0 billion litres, 0.9% higher compared to the previous year.
  • Sales by value fell by 1.1% to £3.4 billion.
  • The majority of milk sold was through a retailer, which accounted for 94.8% of all milk sold during the period.
  • Doorstep sales make up the remaining 5.2% of the market, although by volume, they were 15.2% lower compared with the previous year.
  • By category, filtered milk showed the biggest increase in sales volume, up by 16.9% from the previous year to 335.7m litres.
  • There was also good growth in the sale of J&G milk (13.7%) over the period, but this was from a relatively small base. 

Total milk sales for the year ending 13/06/10 were just over 5.0 billion litres, 0.9% (47m litres) higher than compared with the previous year.   Doorstep sales continued to lose ground to retail sales and accounted for 264.1m litres of all milk sold.  Sales were 15.2% (47.3m litres) lower compared to the previous year and accounts for 5.2% of the market.

Milk sales by category show that both filtered and J&G milk reported double digit increases in sales over the period.  Filtered milk sales totalled 335.7m litres, 16.9% (48.5 m litres) more than last year. The category now represents 6.7% of all milk sold in GB.  J&G milk sales increased by 13.7% (1.0m litres) over the period, totalling 8.3m litres.

Sales of modified milk showed the biggest decline in sales over the period and is now the smallest category in terms of sales by volume.  Only 5.9m litres of all milk sold in the period fell under the category and sales were 13.2% (0.9m litres) lower compared with the previous year.
